Through the Window, Across the Road | May 9, 2020

Amy Königbauer is currently working on collecting experiences of people living in self-isolation, quarantine, and the working-or-not-working-from-home times of Covid-19. A work in progress consisting of making photographs, collaborating with Beck Norman, and looking for writers to submit their work. A collection of images, poems, and prose will arrive the summer of 2020.

______________________________

Calling for submissions of 1000 words or less from Vermont-based poets and writers, written during this period of global quarantine, due to Covid-19.

In collaboration with photographers Beck Norman and Amy Königbauer, selected writings will be considered for publication, to accompany safely shot portraits (through windows and across streets) of friends and neighbors living throughout our communities, during these unique and wild times of self-isolation.

Suggested themes for submissions are: impact, access, equity, ups and downs, community, longing, grief, sickness, loneliness, loss, fortune, abundance, time, productivity, the future, how you’re feeling, communication (or the lack thereof), change, connection, solitude, transformation.

Please submit up to three pieces. Works longer than 1000 words will not be considered.

The deadline for submissions is Saturday, May 9th, 2020. All works must be received by 11:59pm.

Questions and submissions can be sent to throughthewindowacrosstheroad@gmail.com

PoemTown Randolph 2015: Entries Requested

PoemTown Randolph organizers are excited to announce a celebration of poetry in Randolph throughout the month of April, National Poetry Month, and are seeking submissions from Vermont poets as the centerpiece of the month-long event.

PoemTown Randolph 2015 presents public opportunity for Vermont poets to share their work. In response to last year’s successful inaugural event, organizers are again offering a Greater Randolph celebration of poetry. Posters of 100 selected poems will be displayed in the main windows and doors of businesses, churches, and organizations in Randolph throughout the month of April. Once again local businesses have enthusiastically embraced the idea of poetry displays in their venues.

Organizers are currently soliciting poetry submissions from poets of all ages residing anywhere in Vermont. Up to three poems, each of 24 lines or less, typed or handwritten, should be submitted by mail no later than February 28 to:

Janet Watton
1387 Davis Road
Randolph Center, VT 05061

For purposes of blind judging, the poet’s name, city/town of residence, email address, and phone number must be entered on the reverse side of the submitted poem page.

Poets are asked to not resubmit work that has been displayed in previous Poetry Alive!, PoemCity displays in Montpelier, or PoemTown Randolph, or that has previously appeared in print.

By sending work to PoemTown 2015, poets agree that PoemTown may use any poem in display, in promotional materials, and associated online, print and other media.

PoemTown organizers are planning special poetry events and poetry readings throughout April in several venues in town, culminating in a celebration at Chandler Music Hall. Further details will be announced later.

Questions can be addressed to Janet Watton at musbird@gmail.com or (802) 728-9402.

Kind of a Hurricane Press still needs submissions for an upcoming anthology . .

Life is a Roller Coaster
     Theme:  Amusement Parks
     Deadline:  July 31, 2014

*Please note, as there has been some recent confusion regarding this: the titles of the anthologies and the themes are not one in the same.  The theme of the poem/prose pieces submitted do not need to reflect the title of the anthologies (in fact, we would prefer they do not), only the theme as listed below the title..

For details check out the guidelines page:  HERE

While you’re there, be sure to download a free e-copy of our latest anthology, Tic Toc, from our bookstore Here

And don’t forget our other upcoming anthology themes:

Switch (the Difference)
     Theme:  Shadow and/or Light
     Deadline:  September 30, 2014

Petals in the Pan
     Theme:  Flowers and/or Dust
     Deadline:  November 15, 2014

ALSO:

In our latest attempt to expand our reaches, Kind of a Hurricane Press has created a new Book Review Site:

Black & White Gets Read

For this new site, we are looking for authors who are interested in having their poetry collection or chapbook reviewed by our staff editors, and we are also looking for third-party reviews of poetry, flash or fiction collections or chapbooks. See guidelines on the site for more information. http://blackandwhitegetsread.blogspot.com/

The 2014 Rattle Poetry Prize ($5k): July 15th deadline

The annual Rattle Poetry Prize offers $5,000 for a single poem to be published in the winter issue of the magazine. Ten finalists will also receive $100 each and publication, and be eligible for the $1,000 Readers’ Choice Award, to be selected by subscriber and entrant vote.

Additional poems from the entries are frequently offered publication as well. In 2013 we published 21 poems that had been submitted to the contest from over 2,000 entries.
With the winners judged in a blind review by the editors to ensure a fair and consistent selection, an entry fee that is simply a one-year subscription to the magazine—and now a large Readers’ Choice Award to be chosen by the writers themselves—we’ve designed the Rattle Poetry Prize to be one of the most writer-friendly contests around.
