Nature Rears Her Head

Helen Fisher, PhD
Biological anthropologist, Helen Fisher, appearing on Krista Tippett's On Being show —available as a podcast, but broadcast this morning over Vermont Public Radio — certainly felt like a setup for the standard "man-bad/woman-good" narrative of most every program put out over NPR airwaves.

But biology was given us by Nature, and anthropologists are trained to study human behavior as it is — not as women might have it be. So even a female guest being prompted by a female host to agree that all the problems of modern mating fall to the failings of the men, Nature comes to the rescue.

Fisher's professional bent in life . .
  1. starting as a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History, and
  2. now a Senior Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute, and
  3. a Member of the Center for Human Evolutionary Studies in the Department of Anthropology at Rutgers University
. . and all of her other observations of Life along the way just would not let her veer too far from the realities of Nature.

Tippett, whose show promises "a new discovery about the immensity of our lives" each week, reveals that as a woman in her 50s, surrounded by so many wonderful single women, she just can't find men who match up.

Proclaiming herself to be a big supporter of men, Fisher retorts that when she hears young, professional women say essentially the same thing as Tippett, she tells them that they're picky. She assures the show host, and the female audience, that there are as many amazing men out there as women.

We don't understand men, Fisher says. While we've spent decades trying to understand women, we've spent almost no time at all trying to understand men. Men are just as romantic, she says, exhorting women everywhere that "we have to get over this idea that men are fools."

Fisher meets young men in NYC all the time who think and feel — and who want to be loved. To emphasize her point, she rounds out by paraphrasing a poem by Ted Hughes: "men and women are like two feet; we need each other to get ahead."

Even in the heart of feminized NPR, broadcast on a Sunday morning to the People's Republic of Vermont, Nature rears Her head.

PAGLIA: Liberalism Today "Grotesquely Mechanistic and Authoritarian"

". . today's liberalism has become grotesquely mechanistic and authoritarian: It's all about reducing individuals to a group identity, defining that group in permanent victim terms, and denying others their democratic right to challenge that group and its ideology."
Camille Paglia

PAGLIA: Chuck Schumer "Asserted Absolutely No Moral Authority"

"In an abject failure of leadership that may be one of the most disgraceful episodes in the history of the modern Democratic party, Chuck Schumer, who had risen to become the Senate Democratic leader after the retirement of Harry Reid, asserted absolutely no moral authority as the party spun out of control in a nationwide orgy of rage and spite."

PAGLIA: Hillary "Disastrously Wrong Candidate for 2016"

". . Hillary, with her supercilious, Marie Antoinette-style entitlement, was a disastrously wrong candidate for 2016 and . . she secured the nomination only through overt chicanery by the Democratic National Committee, assisted by a corrupt national media who, for over a year, imposed a virtual blackout on potential primary rivals."

PAGLIA: Democrats "Impugning Half the Nation As Vile Racists"

"How do Democrats imagine they can ever expand their electoral support if they go on and on in this self-destructive way, impugning half the nation as vile racists and homophobes?"

Transgender Bathroom Use

One of the horrible truths reality will present you with if you decide to go through with a sex-change operation is that the entire rest of the world may not immediately adjust to your new gender status. Your life may get a bit more complicated on various fronts, one of which is bathroom use.

If you thought you could undergo such a complete changeover in your life without suffering some consequences, or that others would be so sensitive to your every need that you would never encounter difficulties, you were either suffering great delusions—or were not properly informed or briefed before you began your transition to another sex.

As it is, when you go to a public place, and are worried about bathroom use, you have a number of responsible options you can employ:
  1. Hold it in—this might work if you have a large bladder (or intestine), especially if you do a little planning (see following option).
  2. Go before you get there—use the facilities where you live, or somewhere between where you're coming from and the public place you're going to. Convenience stores, gas stations, shopping malls tend to have single-person restrooms; it's your job to find and use them.
  3. Use a single-person restroom—many public places have single-person restrooms for anyone to use, and if you're the only one in there and you lock the door behind you, life goes on.
  4. Use a restroom reserved for those with special needs—what used to be called handicapped bathrooms, or those set aside for disabled people, are designed to be used by all those with "special needs". You now qualify in this category: you have special needs and may now use Federally-mandated public restrooms.
  5. Ask someone to stand outside—a time-honored tradition for special bathroom use, one that's been used by parents, coworkers, and friends since time began, is to have someone stand outside the facility to fend off other users.
Of course, you could always use the facilities as anyone else would, by doing your best impression of a person of the proper gender for the facility, not intentionally drawing undue attention to yourself, being as unobtrusive as possible, and not making anyone uncomfortable around you.

For the most part, nobody's paying too much attention to you (sorry). You're not being excluded, you're barely being noticed. Your not being marginalized. Your rights are not being infringed. It's just that few even care you're there—if you behave like a responsible person.

So you don't need to make a Federal case of it, create a victimhood movement, accuse the rest of us of intolerance and bigotry, or burn the whole world down around you. You can instead behave in a responsible manner, take your life in your own hands, and make the best of things.

You were the one who decided to change your gender, adjusting to the world as it is now on you.

Life Among the "Servile" Puppies

"You would think it would occur to him, 'Every place I've ever been, everyone has hated me. My only shot is to tie my wagon to Donald Trump. Maybe I can be attorney general or solicitor general.'"

Get Her to Sing "Julie"

If not for a Devon Sproule fan who sat by himself at the closest table to the tiny corner stage at Little Grill Collective,* I might have missed an amazing musical experience.

I took him to be a James Madison University student. Where or how he first heard the song, I don't know, as it was not yet released.**

When Devon asked for requests, this intensely-focused fan shouted out "Julie!"

Having never performed it live, his request posed a bit of a challenge. Devon turned her back on us for a moment, gathering the lyrics and chords.

When she turned back, she gave what was for me a transformative musical experience, like being at the Dawn of Music — like watching All of Music being created right before me.

I have since been the intensely-focused fan shouting out "Julie!" when I get to see Devon Sproule live.

Having finally listened to the recording of the song on  Don't Hurry for Heaven,*** I can say you must hear it live to get the full effect.

Go see Devon Sproule, and shout out "Julie!" You're in for quite a musical experience.

*on July 6, 2007.
**she wrote the song based on a letter sent to a radio station, responding to some sort of on-air contest.
***which I purchased at a house party in Hartland, Vermont on May 17, 2016 (and listened to over-and-over again till I wore out the CD).

Killing Bogeymen

From the Republican perspective, the two bogeymen in the 2016 presidential race are Donald Trump ("The Carnival-Barking Colossus") and Hillary Clinton ("The Bitch of Benghazi"). The best thing to do is to kill the bogeymen.

Deny Trump the Majority . .

Make sure he doesn't get to 1,237

The first objective of anyone on the Republican side who wants to save Republic and Party is to keep Donald Trump from getting the mathematical majority of delegates before the convention in Cleveland. The second objective is to beat him at the convention.

The big bogeyman fear? That if Trump loses the Republican nomination for president he will become a third-party candidate, and then—the other big bogeyman fear—Hillary wins.

Does Hillary Win in a Three-Party Race?

"Bitch of Benghazi"

There's much to this concern that Hillary Clinton wins in a three party race:

  1. That's how we got the Clintons in the White House to begin with. Her husband, Bill, never got as much as half of the vote—helped each time by the presence of a third-party candidate.
  2. She's known to have a solid core of voters who would pull the lever for her even if she shot Bill on live television. That number might be 40+% (which would be enough to pull her husband's trick in 1992).

What if none of this comes to pass? She must first escape indictment for a number of crimes she apparently committed while Secretary of State. Perhaps more predictable, is her continued lackluster performance as a candidate. She just ain't got the pizzazz her husband had. In fact, she's a highly-flawed candidate without strong positions—or convictions, apparently.

She screams. She has major health problems. There's Benghazi and too many other failures and scandals (actual crimes) to count. Even her hubby, who's still around to mess things up, apparently thinks she's gone too far left (in trying to become Bernie-lite) to win in the general.

Is Trump Really a Third-Party Threat?

For Donald Trump to open up a third party third, he'd need to finance it—something he hasn't shown any great willingness to do. He's a businessman. He's probably not as rich as he pretends. He can't just pull the necessary billion dollars from his business "empire" and expect it to motor on smoothly. He almost certainly doesn't have that kind of money sitting around ready to be tapped.

Second, he'd have to build an effective third party almost from scratch. Pretending to be a Republican (and conservative one) and crashing the GOP tent suggests the third-party approach presented too many challenges.

Killy the Bogeymen . .

Republicans need to deal with each challenge as it presents itself, never fearing what might happen next. When the next challenge appears, it's time to man-up and kill the bogeymen.

Letting Boys Be Boys

What ever happened to letting "boys be boys"?

A seven-year-old boy was sent home for nibbling a Pop Tart into a gun. A teacher was so alarmed by a picture drawn by a student of a sword fight that the boy's parents were summoned to a conference. Boys in America's schools are routinely punished for being active, competitive, and restless.

Christina Hoff Sommers, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, explains how we can change this.

Why She Should Have Been Fired Long Ago

The tampon earrings, completely acceptable
MSNBC should have severed ties with host Melissa Harris-Perry, "whose eponymous program entailed progressive personalities sharing their perspectives on the news."

Calling her employers racist in an email was the purported reason for letting her go, but this should have come as no surprise.

Ms. Harris-Perry, once cut a guest off for praising Paul Ryan's "hard work", implying the comment was racist. When the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, said he "walks away from people on the street who appear menacing," she used that to "liken the NBA to slavery." She's lamented the "racist undertones" of the entire Star Wars series.

At the height of the Ebola crisis, she said the police were scarier than ISIS or the virus. "(A)rson and looting” were not violent acts during the Baltimore riots. The Muslim Oklahoman, who first tried to convert his office to Islam then beheaded his boss, was committing “workplace violence.”

But, nothing beats the imagery power of her wearing tampons as earrings when then-state-senator Wendy Davis filibustered proposed regulations on Texas abortion providers.

"Nice Cuban Boy"

“When Fox News, National Review and the Washington establishment come to you and say, ‘Wouldn’t you prefer that nice Cuban boy? He wears nice high heels, and true, he has no experience and big ears, but we’ve had great luck with that.’ What will you say to the Washington establishment? 'No, I don’t think so.'"

"Gluttonous Czar"

"A vote for the scandal-plagued Hillary is a resounding ratification of business as usual–the corrupt marriage of big money and machine politics, practiced by the Clintons with the zest of Boss Tweed, the gluttonous czar of New York’s ruthless Tammany Hall in the 1870s."

Woman Stabs Boyfriend

Joanna Dennehy who stabbed three men in the heart for fun
While looking up information on the woman in England who stabbed her boyfriend because he was spending too much time on Facebook, I saw a number of other people have been searching on Google for "woman stabs boyfriend" . .
This trend should be sufficiently troubling to the guys out there that if you're in a relationship with a female who appears capable of violence, you'd better run and run quickly.

If, meantime, you're a someone who's bought the whole man-bad-woman-good feminist take on domestic violence . . well . . sorry you've been fooled (again).
