Nature Rears Her Head

Helen Fisher, PhD
Biological anthropologist, Helen Fisher, appearing on Krista Tippett's On Being show —available as a podcast, but broadcast this morning over Vermont Public Radio — certainly felt like a setup for the standard "man-bad/woman-good" narrative of most every program put out over NPR airwaves.

But biology was given us by Nature, and anthropologists are trained to study human behavior as it is — not as women might have it be. So even a female guest being prompted by a female host to agree that all the problems of modern mating fall to the failings of the men, Nature comes to the rescue.

Fisher's professional bent in life . .
  1. starting as a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History, and
  2. now a Senior Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute, and
  3. a Member of the Center for Human Evolutionary Studies in the Department of Anthropology at Rutgers University
. . and all of her other observations of Life along the way just would not let her veer too far from the realities of Nature.

Tippett, whose show promises "a new discovery about the immensity of our lives" each week, reveals that as a woman in her 50s, surrounded by so many wonderful single women, she just can't find men who match up.

Proclaiming herself to be a big supporter of men, Fisher retorts that when she hears young, professional women say essentially the same thing as Tippett, she tells them that they're picky. She assures the show host, and the female audience, that there are as many amazing men out there as women.

We don't understand men, Fisher says. While we've spent decades trying to understand women, we've spent almost no time at all trying to understand men. Men are just as romantic, she says, exhorting women everywhere that "we have to get over this idea that men are fools."

Fisher meets young men in NYC all the time who think and feel — and who want to be loved. To emphasize her point, she rounds out by paraphrasing a poem by Ted Hughes: "men and women are like two feet; we need each other to get ahead."

Even in the heart of feminized NPR, broadcast on a Sunday morning to the People's Republic of Vermont, Nature rears Her head.

Jack Kerouac Unmolested

“If it hadn’t been for Western-style capitalism, free economic byplay, movement north south east and west, haggling, pricing, and the political balance of power carved into the U.S. Constitution, I wouldn’t have been able or allowed to hitchhike half broke through 47 states of this union and see the scene with my own eyes, unmolested.”

Conserving the Core

It's time for American conservatives to throw off the "right wing" appellation projected on them from the Left. The projection of what they don't want to see in themselves, e.g., nationalism, militarism, racism—and which they relegate to their own "right wing"—has successfully destroyed the conservative "brand".

Complete disconnect . .

American conservatism has nothing to do with the "right wing" of the Left, the disconnect being clear in a number of ways:
  1. American conservatives are in America not in Europe: the assignment of unattractive characteristics of the Left to their "right wing" occurred in the European Left, based on their socio-political model.
  2. American conservatives are conserving the American Constitution: a unique document in the history of government, the U.S. Constitution was not only written in reaction against European experiences of those who came to America, but it design a system of limited government with a protection of individual rights unseen anywhere in Europe.
  3. American conservatives have never sat to the right of the king in parliament—and have never had a monarchy at all.*
  4. American conservatives believe in a government guided by a divine power: the European Left, and as projected into U.S. Leftism, believe in the state transplanting any sort of divine power (God).
  5. American conservatives believe in limited government: the "right wing" of the Left—characteristics of which has been projected onto American conservatives—believes in an all-powerful state.
To restate, American conservatives are conserving a form of government that reacts against the government their forefathers experienced "over there" in Europe, a form of government which holds within it the ability to counteract the evil goals (and results) of the European Left.

The center must hold . .

American conservatism is at the core, the very center of the socio-political system.
  1. American conservatism believes in limited government placing it in the center of the government power/control spectrum, with libertarians to the left (weaker) and the Left to the right (stronger).
  2. American conservatism is based on natural law, common sense, a natural understanding of things, and facts—which are at the core of human life.
American conservatives are in no one's "right wing", unless assigned there by the Left. It is the values and institutions being conserved by American conservatism that are being attacked by progressives (slowly) and radicals (quickly). These values are at the core of our American system of government and must be conserved.

The center American conservatives conservatives must hold or the progressives and radicals succeed in destroying all that is good and right about living in this great land under God.

*The orientation of Left vs. Right originated in pre-revolutionary France with royalists, who sat to the right of the king, and the Jacobins who sat to the left.

Shilling for #SleazyDonald?

To the great dismay of those of us who listen to radio talk show hosts for better understanding and perspective on politics—most particularly this race for president—several of these airwave pundits have seemingly been shilling for Donald Trump.

Michael Savage was quiveringly in the New Yorker's thrall early, then Howie Carr followed. Even Sean Hannity joined in promoting the rich man—speaking of his electoral inevitability, building up his business accomplishments, covering for his obvious faults.

What's Going On Here?

Is this simply cultural affinity (these are all northeasterners; two from New York). Does it arise from long-term friendship. Or could there be more going on here? Money? Power? Fear?* Does this man have some sort of hypnotic power over people?

It takes no small amount of moral development and familiarity with history not to be swayed by success, wealth, looks, and (perhaps most importantly) celebrity—and instead see through the evil behind.

Two prominent talk show hosts—Glenn Beck and Mark Levin—have prominently gone the other way, openly and fervently endorsing major rival, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas. At the risk of losing audience, they have taken this bold move to help save the republic.

National Enquirer Smear

Enter the National Enquirer smear of Cruz as an adulterer. Michael Savage has called for Trump to disavow the story or he will withdraw his endorsement and support. And some curious things seem to be happening in the Hannity and Carr camps.

Perhaps it's just the hope in me—for the goodness of our country to rise up against the bad—but . .

  1. Sean Hannity corrects himself on claiming a Cruz connection to the anti-Melania Trump ad (run by a PAC)—in a Wednesday, March 23 evening tweet;
  2. Mark Simone hosted his show the next day, sweetly endorsing Trump at every possible point, calling Melania's naked fling on a bear rug as simply part of being a model;
  3. Friday the show was a re-run from the day Ben Carson withdrew from the race (which he did March 4).
Switching over to Howie Carr in my addictive state, I discovered that his show was: a) running a poll of listeners regarding the truth of the Enquirer hit piece; and, b) just about the delve into the story more. But every time I'd hit the play button it would pause after re-looping this one bit.**

Cooler Heads Prevail?

I hope somebody has come to his senses. Maybe the station director or owner. Maybe the show sponsors. Maybe even the hosts themselves. Has legal action been threatened?

We should know more soon.

*We've all seen what happens to those who attack Mr. Trump; actions described in this article perhaps making a good example.
**I was listening on iHeart Radio (which might explain everything).

Marco Rubio's Definition of Conservatism

To sum it up, being a conservative is about three things:
  1. Conservatism is about limited government, especially at the federal level. If it’s not in the Constitution, it doesn’t belong in the Federal government.
  2. Conservatism is about free enterprise. It’s the only economic model that can make poor people richer without making rich people poorer.
  3. Conservatism is about a strong national defense.
The world is safest when America is the strongest nation in the world.

"You Rock 'N' Rollers"

"We all have a part in this, we all have a responsibility, looking around at all of you, you hard-working Iowa families, you farm families and teachers and Teamsters and cops and cooks, you rock 'n' rollers and holy rollers, all of you who work so hard, you full-time moms, you with the hands that rock the cradle, you all make the world go 'round, and now our cause is one."

"From Sea to Shining Sea"

'Barack Obama is doing damage to the Democrat party which may last decades if not generations. From sea to shining sea, his radical leftist policy agenda is costing lawmakers, mayors, city councils, school boards, and dog-catchers to be at a disadvantage if the letter “D” is next to their name on an election ballot. He’s fortifying red state strongholds, turning purple states red and toppling Democrat seats in solidly blue states. Republicans should almost lament the 22nd Amendment — with another term in office Obama could well deliver the governorships of California and New York.'

"In Love With America"

"When I was a kid we were in love with America. As early as I can remember, there was a civics class in my public school. And I was in love with those things that guaranteed freedom . . I had a Bill of Rights and a Constitution, those words out of the Declaration that protected me. And I knew about that because we had civics in class. We don’t have that much in the country anymore. So before World War II or shortly after, we were in love with America because we understood what it was about and that’s what we were in love with. . I’d like to go back to civics lessons.”

"A Total Social Conservative"

“Everybody knows me to be a progressive or a liberal or lefty or whatever. I think of myself as a bleeding-heart conservative. You will not f— with my Bill of Rights, my Constitution, my guarantees of political justice for all. But does my heart bleed for those who need help and aren’t getting the justice that the country promises them and the equal opportunity the country promises? Yes. I’m a bleeding heart, but I think myself to be a total social conservative."

"Time Machine"

“If one had a 'time machine' and transported the united labor chieftains of America, plus three million government bureaucrats, back to the tenth century—would they be able to provide the medieval serf with electric light, refrigerators, automobiles, and television sets?”

Political Spectrum Redrawn

NOTE: This try at redrawing the political spectrum properly shows the Left as totalitarian, hoping to dispel the fallacy of that being the Right. Best to dispense with the Right, completely — as it is a construction of the Left. A better way of depicting this is needed, but at least it's a try.

"What is Conservatism?"

"So what is conservatism? Basically it is caution based on a perception that the world is an unpredictable, dangerous and often hostile place. So change is not rejected. It is in fact . . usually desired. But it is approached in a skeptical, step by step way to ensure that its effects are beneficial or at least benign. And an important criterion of what constitutes 'benign' is how the change affects individual liberty. At a minimum, a conservative wants to ensure that change will not reduce his individual liberty."

Right-Wing Socialists, Not Conservatives

In the first half of the 20th century, Socialists with nationalistic and militaristic tendencies were viewed as the "right wing" of the Socialist movement. Nationalism and militarism were regarded by Socialists as "conservative" tendencies.

Mussolini was a Socialist
This usage of "right" is often conflated with the earlier political meaning of "right" applied during the French Revolution when supporters of the king (monarchists and aristocrats) sat to the president's right in the French National Assembly—comprising "the party of order". Supporters of the revolution sat to his left—comprising "the party of movement".

National socialists1 and fascists,2 like other Socialists, believe in all power residing in a totalitarian state—including state command and control of industry—without regard to individual rights, which are seen as subsidiary to state needs.
Hitler was a Socialist, too

Conservatives, to the contrary, believe ultimate power resides with the Divine, by which the state is guided. Individuals are granted rights, liberties, and freedoms by this Divine power. These individual rights, liberties, and freedoms drive a free enterprise economic system and democratic government.

No matter how "conservative" a Socialist group might appear to other Socialists, Socialism remains a distinctly separate band of the social-political spectrum from actual Conservatism. Claiming all power to the state—eliminating Divine guidance and individual rights, while eradicating the institutions designed to promote and protect them—leads predictably to Nazi horrors.

Protecting and preserving the institutions that facilitate the working of Divine guidance through the state, while preserving and protecting Divinely-derived individual rights—Conservatism—is designed to protect the people from excesses of the state. Conservative commitment to an individual's right to own firearms, by itself, might have prevented national socialist evils from spilling out.3

1. The full name of the Nazi party in Germany was National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) which arose out of the German Workers' Party (which Hitler joined in 1919).
2. Mussolini was with the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) until he was expelled for his opposition to the party's neutrality in World War I. He denounced the PSI, later founding the fascist movement.
3. The Nazis disarmed the people and stripped them of their right to bear arms.

"Conservatism At Its Highest"

"The conservative is concerned, first of all, with the regeneration of the spirit and character—with the perennial problem of the inner order of the soul, the restoration of the ethical understanding, and the religious sanction upon which any life worth living is founded. This is conservatism at its highest."
